Owen Jones' magnificent architectural analysis of the Alhambra in Granada, Spain, one of the most enduring examples of Moorish architecture. The book was many years in planning and production (Jones' partner in the endeavor, Goury, died during its production) and became one of the most important early examples of chromolithography. A fabulous set of this extraordinary set of two volumes, printed three years apart. Contains 102 plates (one plate is a fold-out plate, three are double-page and sixty seven are chromolithographs, many of these having gold highlights added). Most plates in volume I have descriptive text leaves (no descriptive text for plates 30, 34, and 52); all plates have a protective sheet inserted. Great shelf-appeal. Each volume measures 23.5" x 17.6" x 1.2" thick. A really lovely set of the large-paper edition. VG overall. Preliminary sheets in both volumes show slight smudging from handling. Last 4 plates in Volume 2 have minor staining extending from the edge inward appx. 1/8 inch at two locations. Exlibrary with bookplate in each volume, a French bookseller's label on the upper reverse corner of the front marbled end-paper in both volumes, faded letters in extreme upper left corner on leather for both volumes. Both volumes tight and fresh internally, with noticeable wear to the lower spine on each volume Covers and hinges are firm.
