Plans, Elevations, Sections, and Details of the Alhambra: From Drawings Taken on the Spot by the Late M. Jules Goury and in 1834 and 1837 by Owen Jones... London, Published for Owen Jones, 1842. Leather bound. 3/4 red leather with 6 raised bands, elaborate gilt tooling in spine compartments; marbled paper-covered boards, all edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Volume 1 (1842): Marbled end-paper, plain endpaper, half-title quote; Chromolithographed Title-page in French with a date of 1841; printed title-page in English with a date of 1842; Dedication page (in English and French); List of Subscribers; List of plates (in English and Frech); 1 sheet Advertisement; pp.1-20 of Historical Notice (parallel text in English and French); Plates and maps No. 1-51 with tissue guards. Volume 2 (1845): Marbled endpapers, blank sheet, Chromolithographed title-page in English; Printed title-page in English; List of plates 1-50 with English and French titles; plates 1-50 with tissue guards, followed by one additional color lithographed plate not called for with no text or numbering. Owen Jones' magnificent architectural analysis of the Alhambra in Granada, Spain, one of the most enduring examples of Moorish architecture. The book was many years in planning and production (Jones' partner in the endeavor, Goury, died during its production) and became one of the most important early examples of chromolithography. A fabulous set of this extraordinary set of two volumes, printed three years apart. Contains 102 plates (one plate is a fold-out plate, three are double-page and sixty seven are chromolithographs, many of these having gold highlights added). Most plates in volume I have descriptive text leaves (no descriptive text for plates 30, 34, and 52); all plates have a protective sheet inserted. Great shelf-appeal. Each volume measures 23.5" x 17.6" x 1.2" thick. A really lovely set of the large-paper edition. VG overall. Preliminary sheets in both volumes show slight smudging from handling. Last 4 plates in Volume 2 have minor staining extending from the edge inward appx. 1/8 inch at two locations. Exlibrary with bookplate in each volume, a French bookseller's label on the upper reverse corner of the front marbled end-paper in both volumes, faded letters in extreme upper left corner on leather for both volumes. Both volumes tight and fresh internally, with noticeable wear to the lower spine on each volume Covers and hinges are firm.
